My interest in Norse mythology meant Deities and Demigods from my Dungeons and Dragons days is off the shelf but their god of travel, the 'milestepper' doesn't make the cut so if I ever return to the role playing circuit (not rolled a dice in anger since 1992) I might flesh out this character a little further.
As ever our plans are quite relaxed, the itinerary is a bit of a twin stop with what I am calling a Tromso sandwich. We have a night in Oslo (the bread if you will) on either side with 4 nights up in the Arctic circle. Our last night marks our 20th wedding anniversary, this is a trip for just Chrissi and I so my trusty sidekick (and her fans) will have to wait a few more months before that team is reunited.
In terms of a plan in so far as we have one. A bit of flying and enjoying the finer sides of airport life. An international parkrun, and some light exercise in hopefully well equipped gyms and maybe will venture outside if the conditions permit. Have co-incided this trip with the tapering of marathon training and quite frankly I have put the serious miles and effort in over the last 3 months so this should mean any exercise can be relaxed and exploratory. Hope to do a bit more norse mythology mapping, via museums and of course look for the works of the artist Munch, but also enjoying a lot of actual nordic munch through the local cuisine. What should we be eating, indeed where should we be eating if anyone has recommendations? Whilst up in the far north we hope to see some of those northern lights but we are just coming out of winter so that may be a bit of a gamble. We have also booked husky sledging but if the global warming has an impact it might be playing with husky puppies instead!
Beyond that we have kept the itinerary free to explore, perhaps not to the extent of the vikings or Roald Admundsen and will learn or reference any other cultural references en route. A ha, whether old or new readers you can guess what's coming.....
We depart in the morn ....
Eloquent writing as always. Your are my role model for travel writing; I will try to emulate your scribe skills in the coming weeks...
